Default 1998 Dodge Dakota Transmission Question

I am replacing some parts due to an odd issue with my truck. It has been idle through the Winter but I would start it to keep it charged. Recently, when I put the truck into gear, either reverse or forward, the engine stops abruptly and the truck does not move. It will start right back up but it will stall every time. I am unable to move the truck, although I can put it in neutral and push it without any problem. Fluid looks good. I am running out of ideas for a repair. Have you ever heard of this issue before? I am going to replace the trans sensors to see if this resolves the issue. Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

Park it somewhere that you can go forward safely. Start the engine, stay off the brake, and pull the trans down into first gear. (be quick.) Does it actually move forward? Stall when you hit the brake?

OK, I started the truck and moved it quickly into Low and the truck did move. I couldn't go far as I had limited room. I hit the brake and it abruptly stalled. Do you think it could be the ABS sensor in the rear? Thanks for your idea!

I would more suspect a locked up torque converter clutch. Rear wheel speed sensor shouldn't cause it to stall.

Try disconnecting the trans 8 pin connector at the trans. (you will have ZERO automatic function, so, have to shift manually) See if it still stalls when you put it in gear.

OK, may be a day or 2 as it has started to rain.

Sorry to bother you again. Do you know where the 8-pin connector is located, I want too be sure I select the correct connector. I looked on line but I get wiring diagrams and not the location other than giving 4 different places.

Drivers side, plugs straight down into the valve body. Slightly behind where the shift linkage is.
