Default Turn signal issue

I have a 2008 Dodge Durango SXT and have some intermittent problems with my signal lights. It happens mostly when I use the left turn signal. I turn it on and it does fine, then suddenly, the right signal will start flashing and then both of them flash. All of this while my left turn signal is still turned on. I am not sure where to start troubleshooting this issue. Can someone point me in the general direction? My mechanics have never heard of this issue and are equally stumped.

I know this is an old thread, but sounds like the multifunction switch needs to be replaced to me. That should've been the first words out of the mechanic's mouth. I've had to replace several in my '00 Durango.
