Question Wheels size change

Good morning guys. I am new here and new to the Dakota pick. This 2007 truck came with 18X8 inch aloy rims. The spare is however listed as being 17X17.5 I was thinking it's just about time for new tires or at least winter tires. I discovered that tires for 18 inch rims are not a common size and are therefore very costly. I was told that if I went to 20 inch rims the tire size would be more common then the 18 inch and therfore cheaper to buy. If this is true what sort of problems if any could I run into while switching rim size?
Also, if the full size spare is a 17X7.5 does this mean I could switch downward in size to the much cheaper 17 inch tires that are avalable just about anywhere.
The truck has heavy duty supension and anti lock rear drums combined with anto spin rear axle. I do pull a 27 foot travel trailor on occasion but not over long distances.
Thanks a bunch
Rob

good morning to you too. I dont know too much about tire size and stuff but what i can tell you is my 07 dakota came with stock 16" rims so if you wanted to downsize i would think it would be fine.

Yeah, you'll be fine with 17's.
