Default 265/70/R17 vs 235/85/R16 on 2006 2500 CTD

I have always thought the best tire on a 3/4 ton was the old standard 235/85/R16 Tall enough to get your differential off the ground narrow enough to dig down into the snow. I ran Michelin's for the life of my gen 1 and gen 2 CTD in the summer and nice knobbie studded snows on all 4 for plowing in the winter.

Now with the new 2006 the truck comes with an 8" wide 17" rim. Can I run a tire as tall as the 235/85/R16 w/o being as wide as the 265's. They are supposed to be the same but my snows off the old truck look 2"taller

The tire calculator I used says the 265/70/R17 and the 235/85/R16 are very close 31.6" for the new 17" tires and 31.7" for the old 235/85/r16's But when I put them side by side the old tires are a good 2" taller.

What options do I have for taller tires w/o going wider in fact I prefer the 235-245 width at the most. The 265 is a waste. I want more gear. The 6 speed and 3.73's is cranking like crazy at 75! My 1997 with a 5 speed and 3:55's and the 235/85/R16 was geared just about perfect.

What can I get that will fit the stock 8" wide rim that is about 1-3" taller than stock, and only 235-265 wide that is still load rated for the Cummins?

Thanks... JohnInNH

I guess I stumped you Ben.... Maybe my local tire shop can help me.

Just an FYI the old 16" rims (2nd gen) will not fit the new truck as the brake calipers hit the rim it's even tight with the 17". So much for using my 16" wheels on the 2006.

Haha, no, I'm just slow coming back from vacation. [&o] 245/75-17 is the tallest thing available in that width. That's about a 31.5 OD, about equal to a 32" flotation size. Those come up to a load range E (10 Ply rated). Are you comparing the old tires and new tires both on rims? If not, that may account for the discrepancy.

thanks Ben... I think someone said Cooper has a 315/??/17 which is 4" taller .. a little WIDE for my liking, but will fix the low gear ratio "problem" till I get my Gear Vendors spliter.... (oh both were mounted on rims FYI) ...

I guess if I stick with stock rims a 245/75/17 may be the snows I get. At least they are rated correctly. They will fit in the spot for the spare also. Is an 8" rim to wide or should a 7" or so 17" be better.

I want a set of winter rims and summer rims so my summer rims don't get destroyed by the salt.

SOooooooo If I get rims I should get the size which will get the best snows I can and still fit on the hubs and clear the calipers/fenders and fit in the spare tire spot.

Maybe you could recommend a tire/rim package.

Thanks...

John

Did you want me to recommend a snow package? I see you're offline, and I'll be gone in another 10 mins, so check out
http://www.tirerack.com/a.jsp?a=AJ7&...nter/index.jsp to see what is currently available for wintertime. We'll have more stuff come mid-September or so as we load up on winter inventory.

Ben... I tried but all I got was:

Due to the unique technical aspects of this application, we can only accept orders for Winter Tire & Wheel Packages for your 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 Reg Cab 4wd over the phone. Please call 888-541-1777 to speak with one of our sales specialists. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Not much help!

I wish I could just use a program that told me what tires fit the rim sizes I put in. like a 7" x 17 or a 8"x 17 etc... Then list the tires and their load capacities etc.

I bet there is a fantastic snow combination that will fit my truck using a different width rim .... Since I will have rims for JUST winter it will be a lot easier. I want a HD truck tire that is high mileage on pavement for the summer. I am not into off road or "looks" I am a function not form person. Then a Plow tire for the winter.

My truck is on the highway 95 % of the time. I want what works the best ..... LOL I can't see them when I am driving! But I can sure feel them.
