Performance SUV tires
Been looking around the net for some good affordable performance rating SUV tires for my 2000 Durango R/T. Currently have a set of BFG Comp T/A's 275x60x17 and just found out they no longer make those tires. Of the tires I have seen out there, most tires are just regular truck suv tires and are designed more like all season type.
I like to find another tire that is comparable to my Comp T/A's and like to go to 285 width as I like to protect my rims from hitting the curbs. I like to avoid Goodyear as they are way overpriced but saw a couple performance models for my R/T but I am sure the price is way past my reach as I plan to replace all 4 tires at once as required when you have a AWD drivetrain.

I know I'm not the Tire Rack people, but I'd suggest looking at the Kumho ECSTA STX tires.....I ran them on my Dakota and they were great.....They come in a 275/60/17 size, are sport truck/sport SUV tires...and ran quite well on my Dakota in the snow....despite it being a 2wd. The only times I had issues were in snow above 10in...
I realize you want to protect your wheels, but Tire Rack doesnt carry anything in 285/60/17....
A set of Kumho's is around $425 or so....and they are V rated as well...

Hey Call summit racing in akron ohio they deal with alot of tires and specialty items for trucks could steer you in the right direction,, 330-630-0250 sorry don't have the 1-800 number or go on internet summitracing.com that might help you as well. or possibly jc whitney as well..
Wow, that's cheap! I love the aggressive tread design! I am not worried too much about snow. Ever seen snow in Dallas, Tx often? Think not! haha. Maybe this particular brand, its 275 width may have a wider foot print than the BFG's. I know that some brands of tires have a slightly wider footprint than other brands even tho they have the same 275 setting.
I will hope they still have this tire when I am ready to do the changeout. I did a treadlife check on my BFG's and I still have about another 10-15k to go (Approx. another year of life to go) before I have to swap.
What's the noise levels like on this Kumho? Hopefully as quiet or quieter than my BFG's.

I saw a some Yokoyamas AVS/ST tires that based from the owner's review, this is a pretty popular tire and the price is very reasonable. I like the tread design on this but I wonder if this tire or the kuhmo tire is quieter on the highway?
As for the tread design, the aggressive look and the decieving low profile look are one of the main reasons I went with the tire. I had ZERO problems with this tire. In fact, this tire was well worth the price I paid.
As for the road noise....I really never paid it a whole lot of attention, but considering I was in a clubcab v8 Dakota....if it was truly that noticable...I'd have noticed it. I used to chirp the tires quite easily with the Dakota....but I never had an issue with the tires. I can however say that I do know these ran quieter then the crappy Goodyear tire that was on the truck.
The tire does have a slightly wider footprint then the average tire. I really loved the fact that I stopped having the issues with spinning tires in an inch of rain...and yes, I've seen snow in Dallas...but only once
Honestly, the Yokohama's arent bad tires either...but I can only speak on the Kumho's from personal experience..
*Edit*
The Yoko's are actually rated lower in almost every category then the Kumho...not to mention they're more expensive. Also, the Yoko's arent much of a bad weather tire outside of rain.

Welp, I am glad that I have some options when I am ready to get a new set of tires. Looks like I have made my decision and I'll go with the Kuhmo's as my first Choice and then the Yokohama's as a secondary choice.
Thanks for your insight DR!

Thanks Devils Reject for fielding this one so expertly. The STX is a great choice. And cleaned up a post that was in the wrong forum. I turn my back for a minute and you're running the show!

But you might have to get it from a local tire shop if tirerack can't do a special order or something to get it.
