Ram 20in tire options
Ok, I'm having that dillema that I'm sure alot of newer ram owners are having. I"m looking for new tires for my Ram to replace the crappy goodyears on it. I'm interested in the BFG AT's but however they don't make AT's in my exact size (275 60R 20). I know I can go with 285-55R-20 without a problem but I'm not keen on the idea of going with a smaller diameter tire, especially with a smaller sidewall. They also make 285-65R-20 and 305-55R-20. I would like the 285-65R's but I'm not sure if they would clear or not, being over an inch greater in diameter. The 305's are almost the same diameter but about an inch and a half wider. Can anyone tell me if the 285's would fit without rubbing? Any opinions? Any ideas for different tires?[:@]
Anyone who's tried any of these feel free to jump in. I would go with the 285/55s because we know those will work, and visually the extra width should make up for the smaller diameter. The 305's would have a decent chance of working, as long as they can mount up on your factory wheels correctly. They'd probably call for at least an 8.5" wide wheel.
I just replaces my 02 Ram's 20" wrangler HPs with 275/65/20 Wrangler ATS tires. They slightly bigger than the HP's in diameter. I think they are roughly 34" while the HPs are roughly 33." I am getting a slight rub on my factory installed mud flaps but it is not much of a problem. Anything bigger than those tires would more than likely require a lift of some sort. I liked the Wrangle ATS' because they have a little bit better off road tread than the HP's. They go good on the truck as well, fairly aggressive looking while not having much more road noise and handling issues. They seem to make the truck weave a little on the road, but nothing an alignment shouldn't take care of. Plus I am not used the new "ride" yet. I would say the 285/65's would be damn close to rubbing, but I might consider taking the chance.
Good Luck,
Zack

Cool, thanks for the ideas. I know the mud flaps wouldn't be an issue since I don't have them. I'm really leaning towards the 285 65R's, guess I just need to get under my truck and do some measuring and checking to see if I'll rub anywhere. I've never even checked into the goodyears, so thanks for the heads up. But I'll probably not go the goodyear route just because, based on past experience, I never get the life out of them that I should. but thanks anyways. I'll keep posted on how things go.
Well, I've got 'em. LT 285 65R 20's! Let me tell you, they look bad ***!
I haven't had any rubbing or clearance issues whatsoever. I just got back from a 2600 mile round trip to MI and they ride great. The ride is a little stiffer due to the higher load range tire, but definitely worth it. I would highly recommend this size for anyone looking to go up a size on their 20's, at least with a 4x4. I"ll try to get some pics on here soon.
