Default can "optional" tire sizes be used w/o changing wheels?

I've searched around for posts that might answer my (probably terribly newbie) question, but to no avail.

The tires for my 2003 Neon SXT are those cruddy Goodyear Eagles: 185-60R15s. I hate them: they're squishy on the bumpy and twisty roads in my town and are complete crap after a single sizzling summer (Austin, TX). Tirerack tells me an "optional" size available in a 15" wheel is a 195-55R15: can I change to the new tire size without requiring new wheels? If so, that would be awesome, because there are far fewer options available in the original tire size (unless I'm more tired than I think and missed something really groovy).

Ah, how I miss my Dunlop SP Sport A2s I had on my 2000 Neon: now those were tires. I'd love to have something like them, which would stop on a dime and corner on a rail, even in a central Texas downpour or a 110F sunny day. Comfort is my next big consideration, especially since my "princess & the pea" three-year-old will complain if the ride is "too bumpy!" Noise is the least of my considerations, since I have my own backseat noisemaker.

Any suggestions are welcome! I'm getting an alignment, and the tires are going on ASAFP after that.

The 195/55-15 will fit any 15" rim from 5.5 to 7" wide. There are a couple really good tires in the optional size. I might look at the Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S, which is an outstanding tire. Feel free to call me at my direct extension at Tire Rack.
