Dodge Ram 2009-Present: How to Reset TPMS

When swapping to aftermarket wheels or changing out the TPMS in your tires, the dreaded TPMS light may illuminate and stay on. Let's sort it out.

This article applies to the Dodge Ram (2009-present).

There are a handful of causes for a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) light to be illuminated on your dashboard. Perhaps you recently had a new set of tires installed, or purchased a new set of wheels, or maybe your truck has been sitting for too long and the tires deflated. Regardless of how it happened, take care of it with help from this article.

Materials Needed

  • 10/12mm socket and wrench
  • Air compressor/tire inflator

Step 1 – Check tire pressure

To begin with, ensure that your tire pressure is at the recommended range. This info is listed on the driver's side door jamb of your vehicle, as well as within the EVIC panel in the gauge cluster. Air up your tires with a tire compressor. If you don't have access to a tire inflator or compressor, most gas and service stations will have pay-to-play air access.

Step 2 – Drive the car

TPMS sensors will "learn" that your tires are set to the correct pressure through a few drive cycles. In layman's terms, turn the truck on and drive it for a few miles. The light should turn off automatically. If it doesn't turn off, continue to Step 3.

Step 3 – Disconnect battery

So, you drove it for a few days and the light is still on? Ready your 10mm socket and wrench; it's time to disconnect the battery. Remove the negative battery terminal and let the battery sit unconnected for 10-15 minutes, and then reconnect it. You just performed a hard reset on the car. All of the vehicle's systems are now going to relearn various operating parameters, your TPMS included.

If the TPMS light comes on after this step, the sensor requires replacement.
