It’s Alive

It’s Alive…Alive!  It’s October and if you’ve got monsters on your mind, take a look at this modified Mazda Miata.  Dressed up in Halloween orange and black, the 1999 Mazda Miata started its first life as a lightweight sports car with a modest four-cylinder, 140 horsepower engine.

New body parts

This third-generation, Miata has had a major heart transplant in the form of American muscle.  A mad mechanic has swapped out the original four-cylinder engine and replaced it with the powerplant from a Dodge Hellcat.  The 6.2-liter Hemi V8 engine has been dyno tuned by VMP Performance and tops off at a menacing 683 horsepower and 647-foot pounds of torque.  Equipped with a new six-speed manual transmission and some suspension tweaks, the little hellion also has a new Sparco steering wheel and a brand-new set of Wildwood brakes.

You can’t outrun this little monster

You can’t outrun this little monster.  The Mazda Miata hellion comes to life with claims of hitting 175 mph in fifth gear. It’s ready to run down the competition with a heavy-duty cooling system and a set of Hoosier R7 racing tires.

What’s hiding underneath the hood

Cars like this are usually ringers on the race track but you can't hide anything with that Mopar power coming through the hood.  Many street racers have used the element of surprise to take down flashy competitors.  I remember seeing a Volkswagen Beetle with a swapped powerplant beat a Porsche 911 Turbo in the quarter-mile on a summer night in Miami.  It’s quite an old trick.  Get an underpowered, lightweight car and find the biggest, supercharged engine that will fit under the hood and you’ve got an easy win.  In this case, the 6.2-liter Hemi V8 engine doesn’t hide underneath the hood. The engine leers menacingly from a cutaway, reminiscent of a huge blower or a six-pack on an American muscle car. It’s the motor and the transmission that make this car ready for the track.  It comes equipped with a roll bar and a set of full harness race seats but all of the creature comforts have been left on the cutting room floor.  The Mazda Miata Hellcat is basically a supercharged Hemi V8 with seatbelts.

The monster in your neighborhood

The monster in your neighborhood.  Barret-Jackson auctions featured the modified Mazda Miata at no reserve over the past weekend.  So, if you want to terrorize your neighborhood with frightening displays of speed or wake up your neighbors in the dead of night to the shrill pitched scream of tires peeling on asphalt, you can build one of these things for yourself. Similar Mazda Miata modification builds with Chevrolet, 6.2-liter LS3 V8 engines have gone for prices as high as $82,000.
