Default crank shaft difference

Hello, I am in the middle of putting a manual four speed in a 1973 crew cab w200, which originally had a 727 in it. Someone told me today that dodge did not drill the end of the crank shaft to accept a pilot bearing and input shaft on an engine that was destined to have an automatic in it. Does anyone know how much truth there is to this statement?
