Default Lower Ball Joint Question

Ok I have what may be a dumb question. I have a 97 Ram 318 2wd that has been sitting for three years with the tranny out of it. (I have owned it since 2001, just the tranny has been broken 3 years), anyways, the trans is getting rebuilt. While I am under it working and checking things out, I noticed the rubber boot around both bottom ball joints is completely gone. Does this mean they are on their way out, or possibly gone already? I assume so. But want to make sure. I don't remember any popping when I drove it before. Also, how difficult are they to change out on these trucks? I have done them before in 3rd gen GM F bodies and they weren't too difficult.

That means they are just gone completely and need to be replaced.

No such thing as a dumb question. They may not be completely gone at the moment, but, without the boots, it won't be long before they are. Now is as good a time as any to change them.
