Default Camshaft Position Sensor

I think a gallon of gasoline and a 99 cent Bic is the real solution... but anyway. Last Sunday I was left stranded, after a short time I was able to get it up and going (hammer works wonders) got it home and diagnosed it as the Crank positions sensor, changed that out and it has worked great until today.... same crap different day.... let it set for a while, when it cools it will crank...check engine light... 0340 code camshaft position sensor.

1 - where is it at?

2 - is there anyway to check it?

3 - where can I buy one? Local autoparts store does not even stock it.

4 - what should be the expected lifespan of the cam and crank sensor?

bunch of dumb questions I should know the answer to... but I don't....

Thanks

Michael

From the 2001 manual motors- 3.9L/5.2L/5.9L
The Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor is located in
the distributor.

Edit section 8 ignition control - page 5.

take airbox off. unscrew the 2 bolts that hold your cap on. take the rotor out and unplug the wire that goes to the sensor. it is circular and will just pop out. no screws or bolts hold it in. that can contribute to your dieing out when motor gets warm. autozone had them in stock when i replaced mine. but if you have to order it try rockauto.com. should last for the life of the truck repeat(should) no promises

The parts store will be calling it a Distributor pick up or pick up coil.

Default Camshaft position sensor

I just picked up a new "camshaft position sensor" for my Dodge pickup. The local part stores i called didn't even have a listing for a part called by that name that. They called it a "Ignition pickup". I made my purchase at Advance Auto Parts. The part for my truck was "BWD" brand with a part number of ME657. The cost was $53.00. I hope this info helps others in the same position i was in.
