Transmission start in 3rd gear

Transmission start in 3rd gear
Started truck to go to work and everything worked fine until I came to the first stop. Then it would start out in 3rd gear. I can manually shift from 1st to 2nd to 3rd and OD works as it should. The truck will shift normally from 1st through 3rd only once, after restarting engine. There is no slippage. Did brake torque thing and stall was around 2000-2200 rpm's. Checked fluid level and TV cable.
My guess it's a stuck valve and or sensors, but why will it shift properly, after restarting the motor for only one shift sequence, then go back to starting out in 3rd again? No codes.
Thanks for any thoughts

Less than 5000 miles ago by a shop not trained in transmission repair. It's at a good transmission shop getting rebuilt now. Clutch material from the torque converter was all over the place when they pulled the pan this morning. They were a little puzzled at what the scan tool was saying and the driveability symptoms.
The shop that changed filter and fluid awhile back did mention there was gunk on the filter, but apparently they didn't know what it was. I will try to give a better explanation of what was going on after I talk to the shop tomorrow. My options were getting it back on the road quick for 400.00 to 500.00 only to fail again, or go for the complete job. Rebuild will be done tomorrow.

It works 2100.00 later. There was black mush in all the cooler lines and in the pan from the TC. They had to reflash the pcm because of the new torque converter. Now I have to hit 50 mph before OD, which is like the 5.2 I totaled out. Didn't like it on the 5.2 and not sure I like it much now , unless there's a good reason for it. I was told before that the 5.2 were programmed to engage OD at 50 mph because of less power than the 5.9.
The other thing I don't like about this reflash is after the 2-3 shift at 30-32 mph, the tc doesn't lockup until 45 mph and then finally after 50 you od. Will be back at shop in the morning.

Whatever it was it changed OD to engage at 50-52mph ,instead of 45 mph. No TC lockup in 3rd when OD is on, but locks normal in 3rd with OD off. Seems to have better acceleration, or less lug in the 32mph to 50ish-mph range when jumping on freeway.
It seems like they did a software update from a Chrysler TSB 18-006-02 REV B around 2002. For customers complaining about perceived lack of power in that speed range and surging when in OD, also when there is no upshift from 3rd after a 4-3 downshift ,usually when using cruise. So go figure. My mpg indicator seems to be a little higher when cruising at 55 to 60.I wasn't complaining about any of these symptoms. Maybe it is better for the transmission like this, I don't know. And I have thought about getting the stock tune from Hemifever.
