take off the air filter box, open the throttle all the way, shine a bright lite down there. See oil? Plenum is bad.

That's a good tip. I also get 12 with no mods bone stock, wheels and all, 150k miles. 2001 quad cab 5.9 owned since new. Also noticed similar #s to what Spillage reported. The good thing is I work from home and don't have a commute, otherwise I would have to get an economical vehicle if/when I return permanently to the office.

Default Loss in mileage

Too bad all this crap had to be done in January/February outside in the cold..

I don't always drive like a puss, but when I do, my MPG's make a small jump.
So I got my 99 1500 5.2 about 5months ago I was getting 17.5 on the highway and about 12-13 in town now I'm getting about 7-8 in town and in afraid to take it on the highway with the loss in town any ideas where to start... It has no cat and a flowmaster muffler just did a tune up plugs and wires and cleaned the air filter

Check the plenum. (see the sticky at the top of this forum.)

How many miles on it? How old are the O2 sensors?

I have two Laramie's both stock 318s but set up differently. The "new" one has 3.92 with 265s =1500 rpm @ 55mph I get 14's as high as 16 in the summer @ 60 on the highway. Drops to 11 maybe 10 all short driving in the winter as temps get down to 0 or below
The "old" one has 3.55 with 245 =1600 rpm @ 55. It will reach up to 19 all hwy @ 55. Short driving is 13 14 dropping as temp recedes into the teens & 0. It seems these pickup trucks are unable to get full use of the auto in cold temps. I had a 01 which could only get 10-12 ever. It was a 1500 2 wheel 3.55 with 225 tires, go figure

Checked the plenum no oil that I can see it has about 196,000 miles on it. I also changed the front o2 sensor and I am about to do a oil change. Ran some fuel injector cleaner in it and I only run premium gas in all my vehicles

I'll trade you guys..I only get 95 miles to a full tank in my 99 5.9. But I think my plenum, cat, and both o2s are bad.
