I have a power steering fluid leak somewhere near where the fluid lines connect at the bottom. What is that box called that they connect to, it’s located near the driver’s side under the truck and if I remember correctly the tie rods run into it. I don’t think it’s the pump but could be wrong, there is no pulley on it. I am very mechanically inclined but I need to know what that box is and to what extent I might have to go in order to repair it.

Lucas oil makes a stop leak product for power steering.

If the tie rods go into that box, it's called the rack.

 

I have 02 4x4 with 45000 miles and the same problem just started today. Will the lucas oil stop it forever or is it just a hold-over? Had a major weather change over the past couple of days could this be a factor?

 

The way i understand it, it's supposed to be permanant. Might want to look at thier website, or see if any of the DF site sponsors carry it and can answer questions. Good luck.

My '03/QC/4x4/4.7L started leaking power steering fluid two weeks ago. Just a small puddle each day dripping from what appeared to me to be a power steering componant. The local Chrysler dealer replaced the rack & pinion unit under extended warranty (38,000 miles). This dealer sells a few Rams with its stock of Dalmer-Chrysler products, the service manager says mine is the first to come back for this problem. The service manager is a good guy, no reason to think he's telling a story. Other replies to a related string indicate that the rack & pinion units are beginning to leak w/ as few as 8,000 miles and others with more than 30,000 like mine.

BTW. I tried a Lucas product in an old tractor ('55 Ferguson) to minimize oil blow-by, can't see that it helped or hurt.

I dont know about you guys, but since Jan 1st, 2005, the closet dealership to me, had installed, and shipped out of town 40 rack & pinions, one was mine! There is something wrong with the seals on these racks, and from what ive read else where, once replaced the problem doesnt come back. just fyi

 

The leak not coming back, that's what I'm talking about. Two trips to the dealer to fix manufacturing/design problems in one year is enough!

 

I think what may be going on is that the leaks could be caused by the fact that service people are using that crossmember as a jack point. That can place undue stress on the rack. If you guys are having your truck serviced or inspected, make sure they don't jack the truck using that crossmember.

 

Hmmmmm, think you may have hit the target dead center. My truck had been recently serviced: oil, lube, filter & State Inspection. The leak showed up shortly (days) thereafter.
