Default 98 3.9 fan clutch removal

I have tried to find info on removing the fan clutch on this van with no joy. I am trying to remove the assembly from the water pump.
What is the size of the mounting bolt? 1 1/4?
Which direction do you turn it?
I'm grateful for any help.

Not sure if this will help Captain, but if it's like my 318 (2000 - "2500" Ram Van), there may be a LARGE NUT, that is part of the "Fan Drive" that attaches to the shaft of the water pump. "If" that is there, then you will have to hold down the pump pulley bolts & then turn this "LARGE NUT", & "if" I remember correctly the direction to loosen it would be "Clockwise". I also want to caution you by saying that my "Trade" is not Automotive, & "if" it were me, I'd seek out the many "Great!" & Helpful people in this group for more input, as well as refer to a Manual such as "Haynes", a Dodge Dealership, as well as Research the matter on the "Net".

Thumbs up

Some parts stores will have a fan clutch removal kit for Dodge (definitely has to be for Dodge) that you can borrow with a refundable security deposit, wouldn't hurt to call and check.

On my '99 5.9 the nut turns counter clockwise (lefty loosey)

In my few times changing one out it's never been locked on all that tight but keeping the pulley from turning while unlocking the nut can be a chore. I broke down and bought the spanner wrench from a local Napa knowing at some point I'll have need of it again, for the nut I have a large crescent wrench. That combo made life easy for me.

you can google the spanner wrench to get an idea of what it looks like.

For other ideas on securing the pulley and removal try going to youtube and search

"fan clutch removal dodge 3.9" or something like that... good luck

A large adjustable wrench and a BFH gets mine off every time.

Thanks for your help guys.
I did get that clutch off.
I tried for days but I couldn't do it.
Clint Eastwood said: "A man has to know his limitations".
So I bought a mechanic friend a bottle of Vodka, and he beat the s**t out of it.
It came off.
BTW, the proper wrench that fits this bitch is 36mm.
And counter-clockwise.
Now I need to find the vacuum valve that controls the heating and A/C.

There isn't one. There's the vacuum selector switch on the dash, a check valve at the intake, the vacuum reservoir under the passenger headlight, and the heater valve on the heater hose running to the heater core.
