SRT Demon was the ultimate Challenger in 2018, but Dodge only made 3,300 of them. This one will be up for grabs, Dec. 5-7.

When Dodge unveiled the Challenger SRT Hellcat, it introduced the automotive enthusiast world to the ultimate American muscle car. At the time, 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque were mind-blowing figures for any car, especially one with a starting price below $70,000. A few years later, Dodge topped itself with the ultimate Challenger, the Demon. It looked a lot like its siblings, but was even more advanced, powerful, and rare.

Dodge has made Hellcat-powered Challengers since the 2015 model year. It brought back the Demon for 2018 only. And it capped production. Only 3,000 lucky American and 300 fortunate Canadian buyers got the opportunity to buy the 840-horsepower dragstrip monster that could pop a wheelie and – pumping 100-plus high-octane gas under ideal conditions – blaze through the quarter mile in 9.65 seconds at 140 miles per hour.

If you’re kicking yourself because you passed up your chance to buy one, we have good news. You’ll have the opportunity to get your hands on one once and for all at the Mecum Auctions event in Kansas City, Missouri, Dec. 5-7.

This one may be a little different from the Demons you’re used to seeing. Red was a popular color for it, but this one is F8 Green. And it’s production number #2991. It’s basically brand new, not some driver that somebody had their fun with and decided to get rid of; it only has 18 miles on the clock. It even has the bright yellow protective strip on the front chin spoiler.

The all-black interior offers the luxuries of Laguna leather and Alcantara, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. There’s an 18-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with amplifier – you know, in case the roar coming out of the rear pipes starts to bore you. Whoever spec’ed this car must’ve wanted to share the thrill of its acceleration with as many people as possible because they also ordered it with a leather-covered rear seat.

Those are the bells and whistles inside of this Demon. There’s another one on the outside of it. Originally, it only cost $1, but that small sum bought a lot of equipment. That’s right – this Demon comes with the Demon Crate that includes two skinny front drag wheels, the powertrain control module that enables the supercharged Hemi to run high-octane fuel and unlock all of its 840 horsepower and 770 lb-ft of torque, and a performance air filter. There are tools inside the Demon Crate, too. Those range from a floor jack to impact and socket wrenches.

If you happen to celebrate Christmas and the Demon has been on your list for the past couple of years, this is your chance to scratch it off. It may cross the auction block a few weeks before Christmas, but it never hurts to get your shopping done a little early.

Derek Shiekhi's father raised him on cars. As a boy, Derek accompanied his dad as he bought classics such as post-WWII GM trucks and early Ford Mustang convertibles.

After loving cars for years and getting a bachelor's degree in Business Management, Derek decided to get an associate degree in journalism. His networking put him in contact with the editor of the Austin-American Statesman newspaper, who hired him to write freelance about automotive culture and events in Austin, Texas in 2013. One particular story led to him getting a certificate for learning the foundations of road racing.

While watching TV with his parents one fateful evening, he saw a commercial that changed his life. In it, Jeep touted the Wrangler as the Texas Auto Writers Association's "SUV of Texas." Derek knew he had to join the organization if he was going to advance as an automotive writer. He joined the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) in 2014 and was fortunate to meet several nice people who connected him to the representatives of several automakers and the people who could give him access to press vehicles (the first one he ever got the keys to was a Lexus LX 570). He's now a regular at TAWA's two main events: the Texas Auto Roundup in the spring and the Texas Truck Rodeo in the fall.

Over the past several years, Derek has learned how to drive off-road in various four-wheel-drive SUVs (he even camped out for two nights in a Land Rover), and driven around various tracks in hot hatches, muscle cars, and exotics. Several of his pieces, including his article about the 2015 Ford F-150 being crowned TAWA's 2014 "Truck of Texas" and his review of the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, have won awards in TAWA's annual Excellence in Craft Competition. Last year, his JK Forum profile of Wagonmaster, a business that restores Jeep Wagoneers, won prizes in TAWA’s signature writing contest and its pickup- and SUV-focused Texas Truck Invitational.

In addition to writing for a variety of Internet Brands sites, including JK Forum, H-D Forums, The Mustang Source, Mustang Forums, LS1Tech, HondaTech, Jaguar Forums, YotaTech, and Ford Truck Enthusiasts. Derek also started There Will Be Cars on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.
