Challenger Scat Pack Smokes New Camaro ZL1

By -

Watch as a built, bottled and blown Dodge Challenger Scat Pack with all sorts of traction issues lays waste to a new Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

The Dodge Challenger Scat Pack is arguably one of the best budget muscle cars on the market today. With 485 horsepower, 475lb-ft of torque, the ability to run mid-to-low 12s and a price starting under $40k – no other muscle car can match the Challenger Scat Pack on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

However, your run of the mill Challenger Scat Pack is no match for the new Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, as the supercharged LT4 under the hood of the Chevy produces 650hp and 650lb-ft of torque – making it an easy mid 11 second vehicle. Fortunately, the Scat Pack car in today’s featured video is far from stock and it is considerably quicker than your average 485hp Challenger.

This 2016 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack is owned by a guy named Jesse Rose and while it looks like a Scat Pack – it runs like a Hellcat.

Rather than the standard, naturally aspirated 392 cubic inch Hemi, this Scat Pack is motivated by a fully forged 392 Hemi, which is fitted with a Magnusson supercharger and a massive nitrous setup – all of which was assembled by Billy Irby and tuned by Tony Ding of Ding’s Racing. This built, bottled and blown Hemi sends its power through a 6-speed manual transmission featuring a McLeod twin disc clutch, with a high strength driveshaft and hardened axles from the DriveShaftShop transferring that power to 17 inch Racestar wheels wrapped in Hoosier slicks.

We don’t know exactly how much power this built Challenger Scat Pack makes, but it is enough to have helped Jesse Rose run best ET of 10.409 and a best trap speed of 142 miles per hour. That makes this Scat Pack Challenger the quickest Scat Pack we have seen and according to Rose, it is the quickest in the world.

In the video, this smokin’ fast Scat Pack Challenger is taking on a new Camaro ZL1 which is stock except for drag radials. Even though the Challenger has traction issues at the line and again further down the track, Jesse is able to walk away from the big, bad ZL1. Best of all, this blown Hemi features a 2-step system which makes for an absolutely incredible exhaust note on launch, so make sure that your volume is turned up.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
