Dodge Charger

Dodge Challenger or Charger R/T, Scat Pack and Hellcat can be loud or very, very loud.

One of the best ways to make your Dodge Challenger or Charger with one of the Hemi V8 engines is to install an aftermarket exhaust system. There are plenty of aftermarket exhaust systems for the Challenger and Charger in R/T, Scat Pack and Hellcat form, but you never know for sure if the system that you buy will prove to be too loud. You might find that it is too loud for you or worse, your local authorities might decide that it is too loud.

Fortunately, the new Magnaflow XMOD exhaust system lets you select whether you want your car to have louder mufflers or no mufflers at all. This exhaust system adds “up to 14 to 21 horsepower”, depending on the model in question. Not only does it make your modern Mopar sound better, it also adds power. Best of all, you can install this in your garage without the need for any welding.

The Magnaflow XMOD exhaust system is unique, coming with extra components to create different configurations on your Dodge Challenger or Charger. If you want a more subdued sound, you install the XMOD Muffler Modules, which are 5-inches round and 14-inches long, with V-band clamps holding them in line with the rest of the system.

On the other hand, if you want your Dodge Challenger or Charger to be a whole lot louder, you install the XMOD xTreme Deletes. Both the muffler modules and the deletes are included in the kit, with the V-band system making the switch quick and easy. Also, this Magnaflow kit comes with unique 3-inch active exhaust valves, meaning that you don’t have to cut the valves out of your stock system.

Many aftermarket systems for modern Mopars require you to cut the valves out of your stock system and that is a major obstacle for owners who like to install their own upgrades. This Magnaflow system does not require and cutting or welding, making it much easier to install in your garage.

The XMOD exhaust system for the Dodge muscle cars features the brand’s No Drone Technology, so while it is loud, it shouldn’t drive you crazy during a long cruise. This stainless steel system has a lifetime warranty and as mentioned above, it adds up to 14 to 21 horsepower. We would imagine that in its freest-flowing configuration, it adds 21 horsepower on Hellcat models with 14 horsepower on the R/T models. In any case, this is a solid power increase for a relatively simple upgrade.

Constantly Customize Your Dodge

The idea behind the Magnaflow XMOD exhaust system is that you can get multiple exhaust volume levels from a single system. The company website suggests that the xTreme Deletes are only for track use and they could get you a ticket in some areas if used on the street. In theory, you would drive the car on the street with the XMOD Muffler Modules and when you head to the track, you can swap in the XMOD xTreme Deletes.

Of course, if you live in an area where they don’t ticket people with muscle cars for loud exhaust, you may want to run the deletes on your Dodge Challenger or Charger all of the time, but for those in strict towns, the option is there to swap back and forth.

Finally, the Magnaflow XMOD system comes with carbon fiber tips, but they are also held on with a V-band, allowing you to use your stock tips if you prefer that look.

If you have a newer Dodge Challenger or Charger with the 5.7, 6.4 or 6.2-liter Hemi, this is a true do-it-yourself system to install and modify over time.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
