2005 Ram 3500

Ram 3500 has been fitted with many new parts but it has not been heavily modified—not yet at least.

One-ton Dodge Ram (or just Ram) pickups are great workhorses, especially when equipped with a Cummins Turbo Diesel engine. The downside to the diesel-powered 3500 pickups is that they are expensive when new and as they age, prices tend to stay high, as they hold their value well. In short, it is hard to find a clean Ram 3500 with a Cummins engine when shopping on a budget, but a truck recently posted to the DodgeForum Classifieds section might be someone’s dream truck.

This 2005 Dodge Ram 3500 was posted to the forum by “Will V2Lab” and it checks all of the boxes for someone looking for a heavy duty pickup that doesn’t require a second mortgage. It is listed at $16,000, which isn’t cheap by any means, but as Cummins trucks go, it is hard to find one this nice in this price range.

2005 Ram 3500 Introduction

When the OP first posted this 2005 Dodge Ram 3500 for sale in the classifieds section, he provided some basic details on the truck, followed by a long list of items that have been replaced during his three years of ownership.

As far as I know the truck has never had a tuner installed. It was a retired local garage door company work truck. I don’t know its history as far as injectors or pump.

Does need a radio. Bought it without one and never put one in.

No real rust issues aside from bottom of front fenders. Minor surface rust. Its a Colorado truck so its in very good shape given the climate.

Asking $16,000 or best offer.

The OP also included a handful of pictures, several of which we have included here.

Drive It or Build It?

This 2005 Ram 3500 has some basic upgrades, but nothing too crazy. Someone who is looking for a reliable, heavy duty work truck might find this to be ideal. There has been quite a bit of preventative maintenance done in the past few years and the modifications aren’t going to make it less reliable or less functional. If you plan to drive it daily, you might want to install a radio, but other than that, this Ram 3500 is a great turnkey work truck.

On the other hand, this Cummins-powered pickup is prime for a project build. A few changes under the hood and a good tune would turn this 15-year-old heavy duty pickup into a high performance beast that will storm through the mud or down the drag strip. Best of all, with the truck being so clean, a buyer who plans to build it up could focus their budget mostly on performance parts rather than aesthetic repairs.

In any case, if you are shopping for a Ram 3500 with Cummins power and you are on a tight budget, this Dodge truck might fit your needs perfectly.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
