Custom Charger Magnum Hellcat Wagon Is the Mopar We Need
When the Charger was redesigned, the wagon was dropped. So what would a Charger Magnum Hellcat wagon look like?
For three wonderful years, Dodge made the Magnum wagon. It was a hoot, especially in R/T and SRT8 trims, but sadly in 2008, it was pulled from the market. That’s a shame because as the Charger evolved, the Magnum could have as well. Dave Nenno is someone who we already know is a Mopar enthusiast. With a dream, a cutting wheel, a plasma cutter and a welder, Nenno is out to create what FCA won’t. A Charger Magnum Hellcat wagon.
Starting with a mostly disassembled Charger, Nenno first attacks the C-pillar. The idea is that everything from the B-pillar forward will remain the same, and the grafting will happen blend the rear doors from Charger to Magnum. The skins of each car are cut away from the high-strength steel underneath, and for good reason. “I pulled the skins off so I could get good access to the inner structure,” he states. This will allow him to weld sections easier. And, it’ll make the car stronger. Nenno explains, “the one thing I wanted to avoid was building a car that is unsafe.”
At first, Nenno thought he could just take a C-pillar extension and graft it further rearward. Unfortunately, after cutting the skin and the unibody separately and eyeballing it, this doesn’t fit with what Nenno wants. A fastback style isn’t ideal. “It doesn’t look right when it’s too round at the back… I think the best option is to just section the Magnum,” he states. As such, it was time to get the Magnum cut up for its donor parts. Don’t worry, the Magnum had a bent frame, so it was scrap.
Nenno would pull the rear section of the Dodge Magnum in two separate skin and structure parts. This allows the structure to remain square and to be cut precisely. Afterwards, it was time for some mock-up. He’s excited with the results, saying, “I put the skin from the quarter windows on to the Charger just to give me an idea of how it’s going to look. This thing is going to be so, so sick.”
The design of the rear hatch is still up for debate. Nenno isn’t sure yet how he will tackle that, but it would be cool if a lower portion of the Charger trunk can somehow be used with the structure of the Magnum hatch. This will also be dependent on how the he will install the wide body kit on the car. We’ll be watching for sure.
