Dodge Calls Out Charger Daytona SRT EV Concept Haters in a Pretty Direct Way

As expected, the Charger Daytona SRT EV Concept stirred up some strong opinions, but Dodge insists its focus remains the same.

Few topics in recent years have proven to be quite as controversial as all-electric vehicles, which have quite literally split the U.S. in half in terms of who likes them and who doesn’t. Of course, there are those of us that understand there are pros and cons to EVs just like everything else in life, but we digress. Regardless, Dodge – a brand that has forged a reputation for installing Hellcat powerplants in all the things – recently faced some pretty massive backlash when it debuted the Charger Daytona SRT EV Concept, an admittedly cool-looking retro futuristic machine that even makes quite a bit of noise. Now, Dodge has addressed that hate in a short new video.

The video doesn’t waste time splitting hairs or apologizing for the brand’s decision to go all-electric in the coming years, either. “Yeah, we went all-electric,” it says. “Guilty as charged. But we still have our rights. The right to remain loud, the right to be irrational, the right to break form and push people’s buttons. We have the right to ‘dodge’ convention. See what I did there? And we have a God-given right to save the muscle car. So go ahead, sentence us to life without reason, and throw away the keys. We don’t need keys where we’re going.”

It’s pretty clear that Dodge is trying to retain its image as a rebellious company churning out vehicles that are designed to appeal to enthusiasts while also embracing an all-electric future, which was always going to be a difficult if not impossible task. After all, going all-electric, launching a four-cylinder-powered crossover, and killing off the beloved Charger and Challenger is a trio of bad news that was bound to upset the masses.

The reality is, that’s precisely the way the world is going. And as such, we have to ask ourselves the proverbial question – do we want to drive soulless egg-shaped crossovers in the future, or something at least reminiscent of the rumbling V8-powered muscle cars of the past? If ICE truly is on its last leg (and we’re holding out hope that it isn’t), we’d reluctantly choose the latter option, personally.
