Enough Is ‘Never’ Enough: Redeye Super Stock Will Dominate the Drag Strip

2020 Dodge Challenger SRT Super Stock

Challenger Redeye Super Stock is the first American full production model with 807 HP, and the closest yet to full Demon power.

Thanks to rumors and inside information, we have known for some time now that Dodge was working on a hotter version of the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat and the Dodge Durango. Today, those models were formally introduced as the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye and the Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat. What we didn’t expect was for the Dodge brand to also roll out a new, more powerful Challenger, but with the SRT Hellcat Redeye Super Stock, that is exactly what the high performance brand has done.

In case the Super Stock name doesn’t tip you off as to the purpose of the newest Dodge Challenger model, this Hellcat Redeye features some unique components to help it shine brighter on the drag strip. While the changes compared to the “regular” Challenger Redeye are fairly minimal, they go a long way in making this the most powerful and the quickest full production American road car ever. Offering 807 horsepower and the ability to cover the quarter mile in just 10.5 seconds, the Challenger Redeye Super Stock is quicker and more powerful than any American car before it, shy of the limited edition 2018 Demon.

While the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye Super Stock is designed to shine brightest on the drag strip, this is not a replacement for the 2018 Demon. This car does not come with many of the Demon features, such as the crate with the skinny tires and race gas-tuned engine computer. Also, the Redeye Super Stock does not come stripped out to remove as much weight as possible. This is a normal production Challenger Redeye with all of the premium features of the current Hellcat Redeye.

“I swore that we’d never build another Demon and we won’t,” said Tim Kuniskis, Global Head of Alfa Romeo and Head of Passenger Cars – Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA – North America. “But I also said that every Challenger Hellcat and Redeye comes with an unspoken commitment to uphold the brand and the new Challenger SRT Super Stock is engineered to do just that.”

Where the Super Stock package differs starts under the hood. The engine tune has been tweaked and the redline has been increased from 6,300 to 6,400 RPM. As a result, the peak output has climbed to 807 horsepower and 707 lb-ft of torque on 93-octane pump gas. The Torque Reserve system allows the driver to build boost while sitting at the line, waiting for the green light to drop while Launch Assist and Launch Control help to get the car off of the line as quickly as possible.

To help keep power levels high in hot weather, the Redeye Super Stock features the SRT Power Chiller system, which diverts the cold air from the air conditioning system through the intercoolers. In short, the Power Chiller provides the same cool air on a 100-degree day as it would on a 60-degree day, leading to more consistent performance in any condition.

More Grip on a Launch

More power is great, but only if the car can make good use of that power. To help put all of that power to the ground, the Challenger Redeye Super Stock is fitted with similar 18×11-inch wheels to those found on the Demon and, like the Demon, the Super Stock comes with Nitto NT05R drag radials measuring 315/40/18 mounted at all four corners of the standard Widebody design. Line Lock is also included, making smoky burnouts prior to the run a bit easier.

“Ask anyone who has ever driven a street car on low-profile performance tires and then back to back on drag radials with increased sidewall, and they will tell you the difference is game-changing,” Kuniskis added. “The SRT Super Stock package allows the Challenger Redeye to launch harder and pick-up three car lengths in the quarter-mile.”

Like all of the Hellcat-powered Dodge Challengers and Chargers, the Redeye Super Stock features Bilstein adaptive dampers, but this package gets a unique suspension tune to help transfer as much weight as possible to the rear wheels on a hard launch. Next, to help reduce weight and to allow more clearance for the 18-inch wheels, the Redeye Super Stock is equipped with a lightweight Brembo braking system featuring 4-piston calipers and 14.2-inch rotors up front. Finally, the package adds 3.09 gears for improved low end acceleration.

The result of these changes is a Dodge Challenger that sprints from a stop to 60 miles per hour in just 3.25 seconds. A quarter mile drag strip pass takes just 10.5 seconds and during that time, the Super Stock reaches 131 miles per hour.

The introduction of the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye Super Stock is a big surprise, but what makes this machine unique from the other newly-announced Dodge performance vehicles is the fact that this car will be offered for the 2020 model year. "Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
