Dodge has made its performance lineup a little too desirable. They’re among the most stolen vehicles in the country.

Automakers do their best to create appealing vehicles. They spend years trying to determine the right combination of design, interior dimensions, features, safety equipment, and power that will make a particular car or SUV a hit in the marketplace. The problem with a successful model is that car companies cannot control who gets exposed to it. Potential buyers see hot cars and picture buying them. Thieves look at certain vehicles and swipe them.

In fact, they’ve boosted so Dodge Chargers, Challengers, and Durangos that those models are on a list of most stolen vehicles, according to USA Today.

Numbers Don’t Lie

A study by the Highway Loss Data Institute (an affiliate of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) measured how likely it is for a 2016-2018 model year vehicle to get swiped. The newness of the cars alone makes them prime targets, but the vehicles on the top 20 list also happen to be relatively expensive, which gives criminals an added financial incentive.

Modern cars have advanced theft prevention technologies that make them harder to steal than older vehicles. Unfortunately, many owners negate the positive effects of those features by leaving their key fobs in their vehicles. When they do that, all a car thief has to do is hop in, press the brake pedal, push the start button, and take off. No smashed window, no slim jim, no struggle.

Chart-topper

As the top 20 list shows, car thieves still go after the usual vehicles you’d expect them to focus on, such as the Mercedes-Benz S Class and the Land Rover Range Rover. They’re also open to pretty much any type of Challenger and Charger. And they’re fine with taking the Dodge Charger’s Chrysler 300 cousin. Take a look at the top 20 most stolen 2016-2018 model year vehicles below.

Derek Shiekhi's father raised him on cars. As a boy, Derek accompanied his dad as he bought classics such as post-WWII GM trucks and early Ford Mustang convertibles.

After loving cars for years and getting a bachelor's degree in Business Management, Derek decided to get an associate degree in journalism. His networking put him in contact with the editor of the Austin-American Statesman newspaper, who hired him to write freelance about automotive culture and events in Austin, Texas in 2013. One particular story led to him getting a certificate for learning the foundations of road racing.

While watching TV with his parents one fateful evening, he saw a commercial that changed his life. In it, Jeep touted the Wrangler as the Texas Auto Writers Association's "SUV of Texas." Derek knew he had to join the organization if he was going to advance as an automotive writer. He joined the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) in 2014 and was fortunate to meet several nice people who connected him to the representatives of several automakers and the people who could give him access to press vehicles (the first one he ever got the keys to was a Lexus LX 570). He's now a regular at TAWA's two main events: the Texas Auto Roundup in the spring and the Texas Truck Rodeo in the fall.

Over the past several years, Derek has learned how to drive off-road in various four-wheel-drive SUVs (he even camped out for two nights in a Land Rover), and driven around various tracks in hot hatches, muscle cars, and exotics. Several of his pieces, including his article about the 2015 Ford F-150 being crowned TAWA's 2014 "Truck of Texas" and his review of the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, have won awards in TAWA's annual Excellence in Craft Competition. Last year, his JK Forum profile of Wagonmaster, a business that restores Jeep Wagoneers, won prizes in TAWA’s signature writing contest and its pickup- and SUV-focused Texas Truck Invitational.

In addition to writing for a variety of Internet Brands sites, including JK Forum, H-D Forums, The Mustang Source, Mustang Forums, LS1Tech, HondaTech, Jaguar Forums, YotaTech, and Ford Truck Enthusiasts. Derek also started There Will Be Cars on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.
