Dodge Hornet Might Soon Join Company’s Lineup

Dodge may soon revive its ‘Hornet’ nameplate with a model that will be based on Alfa Romeo’s Tonale platform.

The Auburn Hills brand’s product portfolio comprises some of the most powerful models in the world, which are also responsible for its notoriety. Interestingly enough, after retiring its Grand Caravan and Journey models last year, Dodge’s 2021 lineup was limited to just three nameplates, which include Durango, Charger, and the fan-favorite Challenger.

Now it seems Fiat Chrysler Automobile’s recent merger with French auto group PSA might result in some new additions to Dodge’s product portfolio. Dodge’s parent company FCA and PSA recently joined forces to form Stellantis, which is currently prepping Alfa Romeo Tonale for its much-awaited global debut. According to a recent Passion For Italian Cars report, Stellantis Is also developing a badge-engineered version of Tonale, which the auto group will introduce as a new Dodge model.

The website reports, “in addition to the Fiat Panda and the forthcoming production of the Alfa Romeo Tonale, in the dealership June 4, 2022, there will be a second new model in production at the Campano plant. There will also be Hornet, a Dodge model produced in Pomigliano on the Tonale line, and will derive from the latter.”

We expect the model to go on sale sometime next year. The report also claims that both models will get a 2-liter turbocharged motor. The powerplant in question will probably be the same four-cylinder engine that also powers the 2021 Jeep Wrangler. The motor produces 270 HP of maximum power and 295 lb-ft of peak torque in its factory tune.

The report further adds, ”The new Dodge model, however, will not be marketed in Europe, but intended for the American market. At the moment it is known that Alfa Romeo Tonale and Dodge Hornet will have the same GME 2.0 turbo petrol engine in the US.”

We expect Dodge hornet to deliver impressive performance and driving dynamics thanks to its Alfa Romeo underpinnings. Stellantis’ decision to introduce a badge-engineered version of Alfa Romeo Tonale as a Dodge product is an exciting strategic move, considering the growing popularity of crossovers, SUVs, and pickup trucks.
