Drag Race: Hennessey’s MAMMOTH 900 TRX vs Camaro ZL1 1LE

MAMMOTH 900

Hennessey MAMMOTH 900 TRX boasts more than 900 HP, but can it still can it keep pace with a Camaro ZL1?

You just have to love the folks over at Hennessey Performance. The power upgrade packages that they offer produce astounding results. They allow SUVs to outrun Corvettes and muscle cars to dominate just about everything else. Of course, they have their hands in trucks as well. The Ram TRX has not been on the market for very long. And with 702 horsepower coming from a supercharged 6.2L V8 it is no slouch right from the factory. But Hennessey has already turned up the heat with the MAMMOTH 900 package for the TRX. This brings the super truck a step closer to hyper truck status.

To show what the MAMMOTH 900 is capable of, Hennessey Performance recently posted a drag race on their YouTube channel. This drag race pits the MAMMOTH 900 TRX up against a stock Camaro ZL1 1LE. Sure, the Camaro is stock, but it already puts out 650 horsepower. It rides on sticky Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar tires. It also weighs over a TON less than the TRX.

Although the TRX is sending power to all four wheels whereas the Camaro sends it only to the rears. If this was a race across a stretch of muddy trails, the TRX would have the hands down advantage. But a drag race on flat tarmac? Surely the extra power and all-wheel drive would not be enough to overcome the inherit Camaro advantages. Well, sometimes real-world results can be a bit surprising.

TRX vs Camaro

Let us first talk about what the MAMMOTH 900 package consists of. Here are some of the highlights. You get a ported supercharger snout and pully upgrade. High-flow fuel injectors, and filtration system. You get a crank case ventilation system. You also get ECM and TCM calibration upgrades. This results in a TRX that puts out 912 horsepower and 873 pound-feet of torque.

And as with other Hennessey packages this one comes with a full 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty. And it is not just about the power, there are optional add-ons such as MAMMOTH custom front and rear bumpers. The TRX featured in this race has these bumpers. They look fantastic, but also heavy, so that is not going to help in a drag race. You can also option up 20-inch wheels, 35-inch off road tires and several other goodies.

Now lets race. The Camaro used here is also equipped with a 10-speed automatic, not the manual transmission. That is going to make the car even quicker in the quarter. The first race is interesting, but not fair. The TRX jumps the start and just walks the Camaro. It is fun to watch for sure, but really not a fair comparison as the TRX was off the line before the Camaro even moved. The second race is what tells the story as both vehicles leave the line even.

However, the TRX quickly jumps out to a length and a half lead over the Camaro. The Camaro slowly begins to claw back some of the lost ground and by the end of the quarter mile the two vehicles are just about even. A little more distance and the Camaro would likely take the win.

However, think about this. The MAMMOTH 900 TRX is a massive truck. Riding on knobby off-road tires. MAMMOTH is the perfect name for it. Yet, it just ran an even quarter mile with a Camaro ZL1 1LE. Yes, running a modified vehicle against a stock one is not quite fair. But consider the inherit disparities between these two vehicles. You can not help but come away impressed with what Hennessey has done to the TRX. If somehow you are not impressed, perhaps the MAMMOTH 1000 package would be right for you.
