More Grip Equals More Confidence

Hellcat Widebody

As good as the fender flares look on the Challenger, the widebody version wasn’t designed just for show. The extra space allows for larger tires to be fitted, an updated suspension architecture, and gives an overall wider stance that translates into noticeably more grip, especially when cornering at high speeds.

Against all good judgement, I was handed the red key to a Go Mango Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody and set loose on the twists and turns of Angeles Crest Highway, one of Southern California’s most famous and dynamic roads.

It only took a few corners for me to realize just how much more traction was available thanks to the sport-tuned suspension and larger contact patch of the wide Pirelli tires. I approached each turn with growing confidence, carrying more speed into the curves before using the large Brembo brakes to shed momentum, and then smoothly power past the apex using all 707 horsepower.

I utilized the SRT Drive Modes to adjust the suspension, traction, and transmission specifically for the gravel-covered, narrow road, and dialed up the assistance on the all-new electronic power steering in an effort to minimize driver fatigue on the tight switchbacks.

Throughout the entire drive, the Challenger’s demeanor was so planted and steady that it felt like we were going slower than what the speedometer indicated. You wouldn’t think a larger vehicle like the Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody would be comfortable in these mountains, but it proved to be an utterly competent canyon-carver as the supercharger whine and exhaust roar echoed through the valley.
