Hellcat vs Lambo

Can the Hellcat-powered Americans keep pace with the high-priced European exotic? A little drag racing will tell the story.

The Jeep Trackhawk made a big splash a few years ago when it debuted with 707 supercharged horsepower. Now, the Dodge boys are getting in on the act with the new Durango Hellcat. And for this Mopar, a mere 707 horsepower just won’t do. The Durango is cranked up all the way to 710 horsepower.

OK, fine it would be impossible to feel three horsepower in the real world, but it does give the Dodge bragging rights, as it is technically more powerful. Another super SUV, although one cut from a different cloth is the Lamborghini Urus. The Lambo uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that makes 650 horsepower. It is crazy to think a 650 horsepower SUV would ever be the least powerful in any matchup but here we are.

We get our first look at how these SUV brutes match up in some head-to-head racing. The look comes to us courtesy of the Throttle House YouTube channel. They thought it would be fun to see how the new Dodge Durango Hellcat matched up with the Trackhawk and Urus. We agree. What we have here are some races from a dig and from a roll to see how they all compare under different circumstances. Spoiler alert, the big Dodge does just fine.

Cost comparasion

The first race is from a dig with all vehicles using launch control. The race is fairly close; however, the Durango Hellcat scores a clear victory. The Trackhawk comes in second and the Urus finished last.  James Engelsman says from the seat of the Dodge: “I do believe they created a monster.” Yes, they sure have. The next race is also from a dig but this time no launch control. This race is a little bit closer but again the finishing order is the same with the Dodge taking the win. Maybe that three extra horsepower really does make a difference.

The final test is a roll race. So far, the Americans are cleaning up. Can the European save face in this contest? Well, the results are certainly different this time around. The Urus takes its first victory of the day with the Trackhawk and Durango closely behind. From a roll the Urus is just too much for the others, but not by a large margin. Speaking of large margins, this may be a good time to mention the price.

The Jeep and the Dodge are priced similarly in the $80,000 dollar range. Although the Dodge does start about eight thousand less than the Jeep. The Urus is on another pay scale entirely. If you want a Urus you need to bring well over $200,000 to the table. You can buy over 2,000 horsepower worth of Hellcats for the price of one Lambo.

The Dodge can beat or at least stay very close to the performance of the expensive Lambo on the drag strip. It also has a significant towing advantage over the Lambo if that is your thing. Just all-around performance in the Dodge is stunning when you consider what you get for the money.

The races may have been close, but the results really are not when you consider price. Today is a win for the Dodge Durango Hellcat.
