Ol’ Glory Decal for Dodge Challenger Hellcat Screams Freedom

Three-layer kit gives the space between the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat’s taillights stars, stripes and another growling face.

Despite the fact that it’s built in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, the modern Dodge Challenger is an American performance icon. It’s a broad-shouldered brute that’s large and in charge, and can be as fast as it is loud. The Challenger harkens back to a fondly remembered age of fast trips down dirt roads and drag strips. The SRT Hellcat puts the Challenger at a level of performance it – and cars from other manufacturers – had never reached before. In this video, John from Luxe Auto Concepts on YouTube shows how to give the Dodge Challenger Hellcat a subtle patriotic visual upgrade just in time for Independence Day.

Luxe offers a variety of decal kits that can dress up the space between the taillights of 2015 and later Dodge Challengers. This particular three-piece set best fits the SRT Hellcat model. The first layer adds a stars and stripes background. The next layer gives the area a racy carbon fiber look. The final layer puts a big red Hellcat face right in the middle. The other Hellcat badges should warn brave Mustang and Camaro drivers about what exactly they’re taking on, but sometimes people need all the clues they can get for something to really sink in.

John takes the time to break down each step of the installation process and show himself following each of them. The Challenger Hellcat may be fast, but adding this decal kit requires patience and waiting. You have to cut each one out carefully and neatly, then thoroughly clean the application site, prep and apply the decals, and peel their backings away with the right technique. The steps between each layer also necessitate attention to detail and discipline.

When John’s done, the Challenger Hellcat has a cool, tonal patriotic look and a badass red roaring Hellcat face growling back at those following the Challenger’s taillights. The Challenger Hellcat already looks badass enough as it is, but this kit certainly offers an attractive way to make the car stand out from its siblings.

Derek Shiekhi's father raised him on cars. As a boy, Derek accompanied his dad as he bought classics such as post-WWII GM trucks and early Ford Mustang convertibles.

After loving cars for years and getting a bachelor's degree in Business Management, Derek decided to get an associate degree in journalism. His networking put him in contact with the editor of the Austin-American Statesman newspaper, who hired him to write freelance about automotive culture and events in Austin, Texas in 2013. One particular story led to him getting a certificate for learning the foundations of road racing.

While watching TV with his parents one fateful evening, he saw a commercial that changed his life. In it, Jeep touted the Wrangler as the Texas Auto Writers Association's "SUV of Texas." Derek knew he had to join the organization if he was going to advance as an automotive writer. He joined the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) in 2014 and was fortunate to meet several nice people who connected him to the representatives of several automakers and the people who could give him access to press vehicles (the first one he ever got the keys to was a Lexus LX 570). He's now a regular at TAWA's two main events: the Texas Auto Roundup in the spring and the Texas Truck Rodeo in the fall.

Over the past several years, Derek has learned how to drive off-road in various four-wheel-drive SUVs (he even camped out for two nights in a Land Rover), and driven around various tracks in hot hatches, muscle cars, and exotics. Several of his pieces, including his article about the 2015 Ford F-150 being crowned TAWA's 2014 "Truck of Texas" and his review of the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, have won awards in TAWA's annual Excellence in Craft Competition. Last year, his JK Forum profile of Wagonmaster, a business that restores Jeep Wagoneers, won prizes in TAWA’s signature writing contest and its pickup- and SUV-focused Texas Truck Invitational.

In addition to writing for a variety of Internet Brands sites, including JK Forum, H-D Forums, The Mustang Source, Mustang Forums, LS1Tech, HondaTech, Jaguar Forums, YotaTech, and Ford Truck Enthusiasts. Derek also started There Will Be Cars on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.
