Patina Wrap Hellcat Challenger May be an Acquired Taste
Wrapped in printed rust, Hellcat Challenger will challenge your taste and your wallet.
One of the easiest ways to change the color of your Challenger is to wrap it up. Want a color-changing paint job? Get a wrap. Want to dip your car in chrome? Get a wrap. Want to dress it up like your favorite NASCAR Xfinity Series driver? Get a wrap.
Want to make your Challenger a rust bucket? Buy a wrap, then trade it in for something else. That’s what somebody likely did before Jalopnik happened upon this 2015 Hellcat Challenger, which is white as the driven snow underneath the fake patina.
This particular Hellcat is available at Gateway Chevrolet in Avondale, Arizona, baking under the hot desert sun for $48,989 with discounts and the dealership’s own original price. The wrapped kitty also has flame-wrapped valve covers on its supercharged 6.2-liter V8, as if the 707 horses waiting inside need any more advertising.
Inside, all is normal for this one-owner Hellcat, from the white shifter knob on the six-speed manual and suede leather seats, to the 8.4-inch Uconnect screen and carbon fiber trim.
There are a few questions behind this “patina’d” Hellcat. For starters, why did the previous owner commission a wrap like this? Detailed wraps can cost a few thousand to create and put together; why not something that doesn’t invoke a simulacrum of “authenticity” and “nostalgia”? Considering that this is also a mid-five-figure car, why was it then traded in at the dealership with the wrap still on? We know the dealership is getting plenty of mileage on this interesting Hellcat, certainly more mileage than the 13,045 miles the car has on the odometer.
All we can say is whoever buys this Hellcat Challenger will definitely have quite the story to tell, especially if it ends with the wrap coming off so the white paint can keep things somewhat cool under the hot Arizona sun.
