Dodge Viper with a big boost setup runs a 7.53 quarter mile at 188 miles per hour.
Since production of the Dodge Viper ended a few years back, we really haven’t talked much about the legendary Mopar supercar, but this week’s Track Time Tuesday video showcases the world’s quickest Gen V. This video comes to us from the YouTube channel of Vengeance Racing and it shows this wicked twin turbocharged supercar winning an event and setting a world record in less than eight seconds. Best of all, this world record and event-winning run comes against a pretty nasty Chevrolet Corvette, so we in addition to a world record being set, we get to watch this Viper squash a Chevy.
Ned Dunphy’s Gen V Viper
There are few details included with the video above, but we know that this Yorange Dodge Viper TA is owned and driven by Ned Dunphy. This car is built by Vengeance Racing and it features a big twin turbo setup on a Vengeance Racing-built V10 engine, mated to a race-ready automatic gearbox. It clearly has some suspension work to make use of all of that power and the small rear wheels are wrapped in Mickey Thompson ET Street R tires, so all of that boosted V10 power hits the ground hard.
In addition to all of the parts added to make this Dodge Viper go fast, it also has a safety cage, racing harnesses and a parachute to keep the driver safe at speeds nearing 200 in the quarter-mile.
Battling the Corvette
In the video above, Dunphy’s Viper is taking on a silver Corvette in the Street X class final round of a Speed Addicts event. For the first pass, the Dodge is in the near lane and the Chevy is in the far lane, and when the green lights drop, the Viper rips out of the hole to a huge lead. The twin turbo V10 supercar keeps pulling away for what appears to be a big win, but hold on a second.
It turns out that the timing system wasn’t set of correctly, so the two had to run again. This time, for whatever reason, the cars switch lanes, but it doesn’t make any difference. Once again, the Viper gets off of the line a whole lot hard, taking an early lead and never looking back.
On the big end, the Corvette runs a respectable 7.75 at 189.5 miles per hour, but it falls well short of the 7.53 at 188.78 by the Viper. That gave the Dodge the Speed Addicts Street X class win, but it also gave Ned Dunphy the world record for the quickest quarter mile time by a Gen V Viper.
"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.
"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.
"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.
"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.
"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.
