Ultra-Rare Maserati MC12 Stradale Sells for Stunning $5.2 Million
This Maserati MC12 Stradale is one of 50 built in total, and it managed to set a new record at auction for the model and Maseratis in general.
Many car enthusiasts are undoubtedly aware of the Maserati MC12 Stradale, which was based on the already impressive Ferrari Enzo and built so that the brand could participate in international GT racing endeavors. The MC12 Stradale is certainly unique in terms of its bodywork, separating itself from its prancing horse counterpart with a distinctive, more aerodynamic shape. Only 50 examples of the Maserati MC12 Stradale were produced in total, however, and it originally carried a lofty price tag of around $1.5 million. Today, they’re selling for much more than that.
In fact, this particular Maserati MC12 Stradale just reset the record books when it crossed the block at Broad Arrow’s Monterey Jet Center Auction, held during Monterey Car Week in California in August. It hammered for an incredible $5.2 million, which is good enough to make it the most expensive version of the special machine ever sold at auction, surpassing the previous record by a lofty 37 percent. If that isn’t enough, that sales result also makes this MC12 the most expensive modern Maserati ever sold, of any kind.
As previously mentioned, only 50 examples of the Maserati MC12 Stradale were built – 25 in the 2004 model year, and another 25 for the 2005 model year – which, coupled with its high MSRP, was certain to make the car an instant classic. It’s also quite stunning to look at – which doesn’t hurt its case – with attractive bodywork flanked in white paint with blue accents, which pay homage to the 1959-1961 Maserati Birdcage Type 61.
Of course, power is every bit as important for a car like this as style, and it has that in spades thanks to a naturally-aspirated 6.0-liter V12. It churns out 630 horsepower, good enough to propel the MC12 Straddle from 0-62 mph in 3.8 seconds and up to a top speed of 205 mph – impressive stats, even by today’s lofty standards.
The MC12 Stradale was born as a road-legal version of the MC12 GT1 FIA GT racer, which competed on track from 2004-2010. During that era, it racked up 14 titles and 22 wins, including two Constructors’ Cups, five Drivers’ Championships and six Team Championships, as well as three 24 Hours of Spa wins. As such, it won’t be surprising to see the values of its road-going counterpart continue to rise in the coming years.
