1933 Plymouth Coupe

Rad 1933 Plymouth Coupe was spotted tearing up the dragstrip at the 2021 Holley MoParty.

They don’t make them like that anymore. That is a phrase that can certainly be applied to the 1933 Plymouth Coupe. However, a more accurate phrase regarding the car you see here would be that they never made them like that. This is a custom build that was done by Kevin Weigand and his family. As cool as the original Plymouth Coupe was it never had 605 cubic inches of nitrous-infused Hemi power. Well, this one does. It looks great, sounds heavenly, and goes like hell.

This week’s “Wicked Wednesday” is all about this 1933 Plymouth Coupe that was built by Weigand along with a lot of help from friends and family. The car recently competed in the 2021 Holley MoParty running in the Mighty Mopars Super Pro class. It put down a blistering 5.39 eighth-mile time. The car was recently featured on the Holley YouTube channel. All the details of this build and how it came about are discussed in the video. Like the car itself the video is pretty quick but there is a lot to take in. Let’s get a closer look.

Craigslist Racer

Weigand explains at the start of the video that he was looking for a car to put his driveline in around 2011. Then this 1933 Plymouth Coupe popped up for sale on Craigslist. A deal was struck but it took until 2014 before the car was in running condition. And it was not until 2020 when the big 605 cubic inch Hemi was installed. The engine was another online find. It was spotted by Weigand on Marketplace and a deal was quickly put together.

Power

The engine that Weigand purchased was complete but there was still a lot of work to be done. A tunnel ram intake manifold was installed which is likely the first thing you see when looking at the engine. Alcohol injection was added. The oiling system, head, and block were all also upgraded. All the power is connected to a Reid Racing Powerglide transmission. It goes to a Chrysler rear end running 3.90 gears. No power figures are revealed but this is a wicked quick car. It covers one eighth of a mile in less than five and a half seconds at 126 mph.

Family Affair

A family that builds racecars together stays together. A special aspect of this build that can’t be overlooked is that this work was not farmed out to a distant shop. The Weigand family built this car. Father, son, brother, they all worked on this 1933 Plymouth Coupe. They also enlisted the help of friends and fellow racers when needed. Naturally they want the car to perform well and win some races. But you can’t put a price on the experience of building a car with friends and family.

It may not have been built in a fancy professional workshop, but the results speak for themselves. This car is a monster on the dragstrip. Checkout the video below to see and hear this old Plymouth in action. We can only hope we perform this well when we are pushing 90 years old.
