1971 Plymouth GTX-R

How does a Plymouth GTX-R earn the ‘R’ in its name? With an 8.4L V10 Viper engine mated to a TREMEC six-speed manual transmission.

A 1971 Plymouth GTX is a rare and wonderful car. Especially if it is equipped with the 426 Hemi V8 under the hood. Finding one of those hooked up to a manual transmission is an even tougher task. Only about 11 such vehicles ever left the factory that way. But if the thought of ten other people having the same car as you is just something you can’t handle then perhaps this 1971 Plymouth GTX-R will satisfy you. It is the only car in the world built like this. And while an original Hemi powered car is no slouch, this one with the 630 horsepower Viper V10 will demolish it.

This week’s “Wicked Wednesday” is all about this 1971 Plymouth GTX-R. It was recently spotted at a Barrett-Jackson auction. A walkaround video of this incredible build was posted on the AutoHunter Cinema YouTube channel. The car was built by the folks at Horsepower Northwest. To stay true to their name they made sure this car had plenty of grunt by stuffing an 8.4L V10 Viper engine under the hood. And while that might be the headline feature there are myriad other touches that make this build extra special. Let’s take a closer look.

Special Touches

Viper badge

The exterior of the car is painted in F8 Green. It is a color that you can find on modern Mopar cars, but also looks perfect on this car from the disco era. The custom satin bronze Boze Forged wheels look perfect with the green exterior. More subtle touches to the exterior include a red ‘Stryker’ badge also lifted from the Viper. And if you look really close you will notice the air intake in the headlight just like you would find on a modern Hellcat. A very good-looking build from the outside.

Inside

Interior

Hop on inside and you will not be disappointed with this 1971 Plymouth GTX-R. The tan and black interior includes a set of Viper seats. The center console has been updated to look like a modern Hellcat. The steering wheel is a vintage unit with a ‘GTX-R’ badge on the center hub. But the star of the show inside is the pistol grip shifter. That controls the TREMEC T56 six-speed manual transmission. This car has everything it needs to be a delight for any driving enthusiast.

Sold

1971 Plymouth GTX-R

Do you love this car? So do we, but unfortunately it just sold. The car was offered at no reserve at the Barrett-Jackson Houston 2022 auction. It sold for $148,500. Not an insignificant amount of money to be sure. However, this is a one of one masterpiece. It looks like nothing else on the road, and it has the performance chops to back up those looks. And given the amount of work that appears to have gone into this car we would guess that it sold for less than it cost to build. Hopefully the new owner gets it out on the open road to enjoy it. This is a car that begs to be driven.
