Default Tire Question

Great forum here, ihave spent the last several weeks here reading old posts. Its great to be able tolisten and chatwith people that share an interest. I have a really nice well taken care of 98 Avenger Sport, that weird silver color (Silver Mist). Its got the aluminum 16"x 6" wheels with 205/55r/16tires. My question is has anyone ever tried adifferent size tire without changing my wheels, maybe a 50 series. I really dont wanttoloss my height.Just want a wider look, but still be able to use my 6" wheel.I am shopping for tires now so any comments would be appriceated also the brand name of some tires would help to.

Welcome to DF Mxer969.
I wouldn't recommend a tire wider than 215 since the stock 17s are 215/50/17 and are 6.5" wide. The reason is to stay within spec of tire rotation speeds so that your speedo don't stray too far from the actual ground speed.

You can technically go as big as what will fit on the stock rim, but it will throw off the speedo.
The series spec affects the tire height though, meaning, your ride height will drop about 5% if you go to a 50 series from a 55 series tire. You also have to keep in mind of the tire rubbing against the fenders or suspension parts, so, that's another variable that will keep you from going too wide.
Here's a site about tire terminology. It'll help keep us on the same page.
Tire terms
Most DSM cars with the same rim size (6") go up to a 215/55/16.
