Double check your wires to ensure the right wire goes to the right plug. Also check your plugs-mainly the gap-make sure if you accidentally dropped one of them that it isn't cracked. What brand wires and plugs-If you bought them at autozone........take them back and find a better parts supplier!!!

I'd check that the wires are seated properly FIRST .... Push them down on the plugs and at the dist. cap ....

The most obvious thing is that the backfires didn't start up until you changed the plugs and wires. There's only so much that could be wrong with those two.
I agree with the things mentioned by above. Be sure that you placed the wires on the right plugs and make sure they are seated properly, if that doesn't solve the issue, check your gapping on the plugs.
If none of that works, what brand wires and plugs did you buy?
I'm pretty sure the CEL is going to say something about the misfire but it never hurts to do the keydance for the code(s) anyway.
