Default Aveneger Overheating

The other day I rolled into GreatClips for a haircut and notices that my car was steaming from the hood. I didn't think anything of it then when I came back and tried to start it, it would stay running for a few seconds, car would start to shake, then would turn off. I checked the coolant, and that seemed to be fine, but the collant cap was crazy hot and so was the whole hood and engine. Any thoughts? One of my buddies thought it might be time for a new water pump...
