Default Transmission issues..

Howdy I just bought a 96 Dodge Avenger... love the car and plan on doing a fixup on it... the first thing I need to get fixed is what I believe is called the shifter assembly unit. There is a part (pardon my newbness with talking about the parts and what not, I am no mechanic) that connects the shifter to the transmission and a pain that holds the 2 together, well that pin I reckon sheared off and the previous owners did a jury rigging job on it and stuck a cauter pin in there. Needless to say the cauter pin did not last and I need to replace the entire unit.

I bought the car with the understanding that it would require some work but I am unsure of the name the piece and I would like to go in with a better understanding of what I am replacing and the cost and what not... anyone give me a hand with this would be greatly appreciated.
