Default transmission lost?

The next problem with my sons car. Seems like the transmission is lost I guess you'd call it. When the shifter is at R its neutral, N is reverse, D is second I think. AAMCO thought it was in limp mode with no "check engie" light. Seems like its just lost to me. Also doesnt do it for 10 or 15 miles after its been sitting, also sometimes acts like it slips, revs. AAMCO also took the pan off and said fluid and inside looks good, doesnt need rebuild. Which I've heard since is odd for AAMCO to say. LOL
Any help or ideas out there?
Thanks in advance.

your shifter cable may need to be adjusted or replace. Try pulling the cable off at the trans, have someone on the brake and start the car and run the trans thru all gears by hand. This will tell you if the problem is the trans or the cable.

We had a sleet/ice storm here so havent had a chance to check cable.Someone told me it could be "prindle" PRNDL switch also. Could this cause same symptoms? AAMCO said they got no codes from engine or transmission.

Unless there is a problem with the valve body. Thats why you need to remove the cable at the vent tube of the shifter, and shift the trans by hand and not withtheshifter cable.
