Ok so my 1996 Avenger ES is making this really weird noise when I turn. It makes this grinding squeaky crunching sound. I'm not really sure what it is but I have read somewhere there is a recall but I have never gotten a letter nor have I taken it to a mechanic. So if anyone can help me out that would be great!

 

had the exact same prob... mine sounded like an old creaky door when you turn and it was the front Axle... get checked immediately...

 

that would be exactly what it sounds like. great was it the entire axle? do you remember how much it cost?

 

The recall IS stickied at the top of the forum AND can cause noise issues if they are bad

 

I had 1 bad front bearing that made a grinding (not crunching) noise, even when turning on a curve - but always only when turning in 1 direction. The bigger the turn the bigger the grind. Its a $85/side if you do it yourself. I agree with bad venge to check the recall first as it is free

 

'98 Avenger had a squeaky, popping noise in front even when just sitting and turning wheel or moving and going straight too. Dealer did the lower ball joint recall, no charge, and that took care of it. Definitely something to get checked for frfont end noise.

 

I had a simliar problem with mine. I had a grinding noise when turning to the right...got it checked out and it was a bad bearing. I think I paid 70 or 80 for the new part.
