Default That darn P0740 code....!!

So I was hoping someone could offer some helpful advise on the issue I am having with my 1998 Avenger 2.5. So I have a check engine light on and the codes are P0700(TCM) and P0740(TCC). I went ahead and swapped the control solenoid, flushed the fluid with fresh ATF+4, and changed the filter. Cleared the code and still comes back on. Is there anything else I can try replacing before I have to go for the full overhaul and replace the Torque converter?? I am really hoping that it may be one of the speed sensors or just a sensor in general. The car shifts fine with no jerking, slipping or locking up. So if there is no mechanical issue then it must be a sensor correct? I cant pass emissions until I get this issue resolved any help asap would be greatly appreciated.

Speed sensors normally cause the tranny to be in limp mode ... meaning stuck in 2nd gear

So should I start bracing myself for that rebuild? I would rather not seeing as though the car is only worth $2500. Maybe I am just better of getting rid of it...Anyone want a 98 Avenger with 125000 miles?

Lol...tried that, they read the code and told me I need a new torque converter. I love the automotive "experts" of this day and age. They hook it up to a computer and tell me what it "says" I refuse to believe that its the torque converter because it does not exhibit any symptoms of a malfunctioning torque converter. Maybe a reflash is in order...

Why not just use some actual diagnostic skills and problem solve this. First don't waste your time with the P0--- codes. these are very generic and don't give you and information of value. You need a quality scan tool that will let you into the trans computer. thats where the information is that you really need. Or, why not just ignore the light since you say it shifts fine.

All traditional problem solving methods have been applied besides tearing the transmission off and diagnosing the problem from there. Which I already determined that it cant be a mechanical problem because the transmission shifts with no hesitation or problems whatsoever. Unfortunately the car will be out of commission if I ignore the light. It has to pass the emission test if I want to keep driving it. I will have to find someone with the proper scanning equipment and have them take a closer look. Thanks for the input.

You definitely need access to a real scanner and look at the trans computer and not the generic PCM codes.

There are 2 codes for the TC.P0740 and P0741. These are not generic codes. All auto makers use these same two codes and they mean the same thing. That is the reason behind OBD. The chrysler scanner DRB is going to give you the same code. The reason it was so easy for him to telll you that you need a TC is because we see this every day.Ford is the worst one with this code.P0740 is a mechanical failure code, meaning that it's either the TC or the valve in the valve body. With chrysler it always the TC. P0741 is an electrical failure in the TC system. In short,P0740 is mechanical and P0741 is electrical.Hope this helps.

I have to correct myself here, it's not P0741 on chrysler it's P0743 that is electrical.Chrysler doesnt use the P0741.
