I have a 1997 Dodge Avenger ES that wont shift into overdrive, 4th gear. My RPMs are about 2.2 grand at 40 MPH, and 3.5 grand at 60. When the O/D switch is in the off position, the O/D off light doesnt light up. Also when driving, I can push the button on and off and nothing happens. Is it something electrical?

 

I could be electrical and it could be internal. The only way to truely determine this is with a quality scan tool and read transmission (not pcm) codes, CVI values and data stream.

 

Do your reverse lights work ???
If not check the fuse that fuse supplies power for the O/D switch

 

Yes, my reverse lights do work.

 

check the red wire on the OD switch for 12 volts

do u have a local vocational school with automotive they should have a newer snap on scan tool and all the hook ups for ur car they can read trans codes and tell you what comes up and most codes can be looked up on the internet

 

hey my 97 has the same prob but when i push the o/d buttonit it revs and drops a gear like it should but its not shifting into 4th, at 45 im doing excactly 2k on the tach 60 im at around 25k/3k and my reverse lights dnt work
