1997 avenger es, 2.5l v6. on the bottom of my hood i have a rubber peice right above the battery becasue it wasnt held down and it stops it from hitting the hood. tonight i was on my hood cleaning the windshield when i heard popping and then smoke. i popped the hood and found that rubber peice on fire and part of it melted to the + battery terminal. I put it out, thought no big deal, closed the hood and washed the car. about an hour later i started the car and put it in reverse and maybe moved 8 feet and it stalled, the moter shut off, the dash lights all turned off, everything was off. i pulled the key, restarted it and like a second later it died. then it wouldnt start at all so i jumped it but as soon as i took the + jumper cable off it died. i did this again except i left it attatched for a while and it ran until i removed it. the 3rd time i jumped it i took the cable off right away, it ran for maybe 2 minutes then died. is it the battery or a fuse or did i fry some wires? Im charging the battery right now so ill see if that does anything. please help! thanks, kyle
I charged the battery all night, the car started fine, and i let it idle in the driveway for like 20 minutes. i backed it out and started to drive down the street and the rpm gauge was bouncing around and the anti lock light was on as well as the srs light. about a block later the battery light came on as well as the check engine (these lights were all very dim) about a block later i slowed down and the car died and wouldnt restart without a jump. it would turn over like normal but not start without another battery hooked up. but as soon as i removed the other battery the car died again. im thinking its just the battery but i could be wrong
The battery is fine, i put it in my dads car and it started and ran just fine. Its most likely the alternator. What is the easiest method of removing the alternator and replacing it? my repair manual says i have to remove the intake manifold but i thought i could get at the alternator by turning the wheel and taking off the spash guard
well i started the removal process of the alternator, took out the p/s pump, then said screw it and put it back together. jumped the car, took the cables off and it was running fine w/o the battery. i put the battery in, screwed down the terminals and it was fine. its been fine ever since. i think it was because i didnt have the cable screwed down they were loosely sitting on the terminals. i could be wrong though, i have no clue. but is working fine now
