Default Sputters when Accelerating

98 Avenger 2.5 v6 auto. First of all, when the car is cold it runs great for 2 or 3 minutes. No problems, Good acceleration. After 3 minutes it will sputter or boogs down with normal acceleration. You have to let up, and then accelerate slowly to pickup speed. I have checked for vacuum leaks, blocked off the EGR cleaned the IAC and check the catalytic convertor to see if it would help. Still runs the same. Could this be a bad tamp sensor. I have a temp gauge and its working. Single wire sensor and the cooling fans are a two wire sensor and its working. After 2 or 3 days I will have a code of misfire #3. And some times it will be #2 and #3 misfire. The plugs are new. And the cap and wires are less then a year.

I'd guess CPS especially if you have warmer temps where you live

Ya its hot here. Nothing like working on the car when its 90 in the shade. I had an extra CPS that tested good. I put it in when the car was still hot. It did the same thing. Don’t know if this will help. When its hot, you can hold the accelerator too the floor for 15 or 20 seconds before it will rev up when it’s in park.

Just hooked the timing light up and when you accelerate fast the timing light goes out and it sputters. So I change the cap and rotor and have the same problem. The timing is advancing when you accelerate slowly. Runs good at high RPM’S and when it’s cold. I have checked the CPS. So I think I will go to the junkyard and get an engine computer. What else controls spark and allows the engine to run good cold ? Could it be plug gap ?

I'd double check the CPS it's a pretty common trouble , also didn;t you get a junkyard distributer ? thay might have went south as well the computer would be my last resort

I have taken your advice and changed the distributor. Went to the junkyard returned the old dis. They were having a Memorial Day sale ½ off everything. So it cost $15 for a junkyard dis and it worked this time. No more problems. I could not see any problems with the old distributor. But it’s running great now. So the old dis had some typ of a problem. Thank you, Thank you for all your help !
