Question Transmission Shift Solenoid

I have 2000 Dodge Avenger that according to the CEL code its the transmission shift solenoid. How hard is this part to replace? Does anyone know what will progressively happen if this part is bad? Right now sometimes I have trouble with the car shifting sometimes I dont. It seems like when the car is not shifting it gets stuck in third but if i turn the car off and restart it, it will shift normally again. How long do I have before this part gives up all together and my transmission stops shifting?

TCM = tranny control module = computer not the solenoid, the solenoid is switched by the computer by turning off the car I think its resetting the computer

Question

Ok so if its the TCM would the CEL throw the code for the solenoid? Makes sence to be the TCM if after restarting it works, you would think if the solenoid needed replaced it would not shift all the time? Oh and today the CEL didnt come on when I started my car and stayed out the whole way to work?

The CEL says that it is not shifting it likely can't tell WHY meaning the solenoid isn't shifting but may or may not being told to
