I have a 96 Avenger that periodically will stall after it has been driven for a while. I usually only drive it 10 miles at a time, but whenever I run it much further it will stall out. I have had this happen while driving 3 times now and each time, it was when I applied my brakes. Also, I have had issues with it starting after it has been driven any significant distance. After I shut it off, when I try to restart it, it will crank, but not turn over. After it cools down (usually about 15 minutes) it will start right back up, no issues. I replaced the battery and put in a new fuel filter. Any suggestions? Thanks.

 

Two codes popped up when I checked. No crank reference signal at PCM and EVAP solenoid circuit. Are either of these the likely culprit?

 

My 99 avenger was doing the same.The guy at shop didnt even look under the hood and told me that it was the destributor.I asked how and why? He replied that the distributor gets hot ofter a while and the computor shuts it down untill it gets a certain temp. With a can of computor keybord cleaner he demonstrated, because mine cut off and wouldnt start at his shop.He just sprayed the distributor till it got cool (about 10 sec.) and it started right up.

likely the crank sensor or the cam sensor one is inside the distributor and likely the cause of it being heat sensitive

 

pearluver, just out of curiosity, did your mechanic replace the crankshaft position sensor or what did your mechanic do to alleviate the problem?

 

He replaced the distributor
