Default Rack & pinion - 97 coupe

My son's rack and pinion is leaking on a '97 2.5L Avenger. I'd like to get a used rack from a junk yard. Will I have to remove the center member to pull out the rack? Is it difficult to remove and replace? Chilton's says to remove the center beam and lower the engine slightly. This is a show stopper for me if it's really necessary. This is about as difficult a job as I have attempted so any tips are appreciated.

it can be removed without but a total pain in the butt

I had the junkyard torch one out for me

I'm assuming you verified that the hoses are OK and not the cause

Yes I know the junk yard can torch it out. The hoses are not leaking. Do you have any specific info on removal and install that a novice would find helpful?

it's the fairly simple bolt/unbolt. The endlink connections are the roughest to get loose.
The Chiltons are pretty much right on

there are rebuilds really cheap on ebay as well"
