I have a '96 Avenger, 2.5L and we cannot find this camshaft position sensor. The cyllinders have been misfiring like crazy while in idle, and I finally got the codes run on it, and it came up with camshaft positioning sensor failed, along with a few cyllinders misfiring.

What I read was its located inside the distributor, but we bought the part from Advanced Auto Zone, and it's just a sensor. We took apart the distributor and there is no place for this sensor to go.

A friend who has some car knowledge told me it should be located near the camshaft itself, near the timing belts and pulleys. And I had just gotten the timing belt/water pump replaced, for $1200 at a shop.

They mentioned the horrible noise it was making to me, said they didn't know what the cause was. Apparently didn't run the codes, cuz they woulda come up with the sensor as the culprit, and didn't bother to replace the sensor while working on the timing belt.

Does anyone know where this things located? And if they coulda easily fixed it while doing that other work?

 

NO it's located in the Distributor not near the timing belt.

I DOUBT the sensor will cause noise sounds more like they messed something up, did they replace the tensioner with the timing belt ?

 

I just replaced mine...easiest access to it is remove air intake, battery, battery mount/ holder, washer fluid reservoir and remove bolts from brake fluid reservoir. ull be able to see it directly under the distributor( does not plug into dist.)
