Hi BL18 and welcome to DF.
Have the lower left control arm dealer checked because the the balljoint is a recall item (lower balljoints). Research the Stratus final drive gear for a tad of power and shift points...there's really nothing out there to change our shift points but an aftermarkeg torque converter will help with shifts and so will a transgo shift kit.

Well, that sucks, lol. Did they do a check on them anyway? They should have while they were there. That recall is good for the life of the vehicle btw, not only to the original owner...don't let them tell you anything different.
Check with autozone or the likes. If they have more that one, look at all of them all at once if possible. My experience with autoparts stores having more than one is that the cheaper one is not the correct size (too short/long) or something just isn't the same. I can't think of what part you're talking about right off the top of my head, but isn't that just a bushing or is that a balljoint?

One of them might be Mitsubishi listed (usually the cheaper one). Call a Mitsu dealership and cross referrence the part numbers.

Another thing that it could be is, it just being a cheaper quality design. Those things are hard to tell online though.
