Default How Much fluid should I buy? Also a tranny question?

I'm going to change my filter and fluid in my Auto transmission. How many quarts do I need to buy?

The reason I'm changing it is because the previous owner didn't remember what fluid he put in. So he was a dumb azz. Just to make sure im going with the mopar atf+4

Also for the trans, when it drives for a while, it will down shift by itself, or get stuck ina gear. The fluid in it is real clean, and more of a red tint vs pink like regular atf.

He stated that the car needed a TCM. The trans doesn't act up very often though. THOUGHTS?

when do you have the rachet noise? is it when you are shifting from reverse to drive? and do you have a check engine light on? even if you dont i would go to autozone and get them to check it with their scanner...

I don't know it off the top of my head (amount of fluid) but you can ask the parts dealer and they should be able to help. The racheting is normal, it just means that you have the original relay pack, the newer ones are quieter. Look for metal shavings in the dip stick after it's been running for awhile. I would do the key dance to check anyway or better yet, take it to a garage and have them hook it up to a computer. It just sounds like the fluid not being able to work with the tolerance of the tranny. Mine would slip after a good run on the interstate or just having heated up the fluid would thin out too much...after I got a tranny flush from Time it Lube. Unless you or the previous owner abuse the tranny, then I say that it's the fluid.
The owner didn't put MOPAR ATF+3 in it, otherwise he would have remembered it...I know I would. The gears getting stuck could be the fluid, the relay pack, or the TCM. If the torque converter was going bad, it would slip more often than here and there. The TCM would trip your CEL. The fluid is a silent killer and the relay pack going quiet is a bad thing (unless you have the newer revised pack).

The previous owner said that it needed a TCM because the service manual indicated it. Plus he said if you rebooted (disconnect) the battery it would go away. I think he is full of it there. I did do the key dance and I have no codes, just 55 that is all OK. No metal shavings. So the fluid I will go first. Sound right?

Today was different though. I drove to work, fine, left work and it was staying in gear right away, this is 5 hours later. Then it went away. So it has to be the fluid. Another thing though, when I make right turns I'm starting to hear a sqeeling noise, so now I have another issue.

Other than that, I used 2000 grit wet sand and buffed out the car. I would have to say she looks hot. It is red too. I'll post mine as my sig soon.

also my local car quest does sell the Mopar atf+4 for 6.75 a quart, now I need to know how many quarts to buy!

if you drop the pan and change the filter you need 4-4.5 qts and if you do a full flush ...ie draining the converter you need 9.2

Well here is an update. I disconnected my battery to reset the TCM a week ago and haven't had any issues since then. So far, so good.
